7 Locomotor Movements
Are the 7 Locomotor Movements (walk, run, hop, skip, gallop, leap, and jump) really being taught in the younger levels. Recently we had a rainy day activity where we asked our freshman students to do a throwing bean bag activity to demonstrate proper throwing mechanics, use of force, and accuracy. It was surprising when I asked the classes what throwing with opposition meant and only one student raised their hand to attempt to give the correct response. Then the concept of how to apply differing amounts of force to reach certain targets was mentally understood but the physical capability of the majority of the students was very poor. There were the athletes who could accomplish the task at hand by the difference between the athlete and non-athlete was large enough to notice, and was surprising in such an elementary skill. What does this mean? Maybe movement concepts are not being addressed to the level they need to be? Maybe we need to reinforce those skills more at the freshman level. It sounds ridiculous when I say it but maybe a day of reviewing the 7 locomotor movements should be scheduled into the beginning of the freshman PE experience.
